That depends a great deal on you. There is an old joke which goes something like this:
How many psychologists does it take to change a lightbulb?
A: Only one. But the lightbulb must REALLY want to change.
Some people do not benefit from hypnosis. However, almost anyone can be hypnotised IF THE DESIRED OUTCOME IS REAL AND IMPORTANT ENOUGH.
A very few may come to therapy because they think they "should" change a certain behaviour or attitude. Some come because someone else has insisted on or even simply recommended it. Unless the individual truly wants to become contacted with his or her unconscious motives, hypnosis simply will not work for them.
For this reason, all clients are asked to fill out a detailed questionaire during the first session, and this is followed up by what is called a Suggestion Test. Most people are very happy to let go and relax and are truly surprised by the results. From this, we determine tog
ether the course that the sessions will take.
Q: How long will it take?
A good one. Sigmund Freud's clients often saw him over a duration of years when they were in psychoanalysis. However, Freud (despite having some amazing insights which other great psychologies and therapies have incorporated) was working in the rarified atmosphere of late 19th and early 20th century Vienna. Things have changed a little! Freud's beginning was in Hypnosis which he studeied under Charcot at the Sorbonne in Paris.
CRT/Hypnotherapy draws upon many "humanistic" psychologies such as that of Carl Rogers, Eric Berne, the insights of Carl Jung, Aaron Beck, Claudio Naranjo, and others.
THE POINT OF CRT/HYPNOSIS IS
* to help you gain access through an intermediary
(your therapist) to the things in your Unconscious
that are holding you back...
* to recognise them "consciously"
* to bring them into a conscious domain as a volition
and an action...
* and to let them go so that you can move on with
your life as a more whole, more healthy, more goal-
focussed, more confident, and more optimistic
individual.
Sometimes this can be done surprisingly quickly. Some phobias respond surprisingly quickly to hypnosis.
Sometimes it will take a little longer. Perhaps you will need not only to recognise certain emotional triggers in your life but also how to deal with them differently than you have in the past. The hypnotic suggestions and ego-strengthening techniques you will receive will immeasurably help your learning process.
It really is up to you.
